Rosemary Taylor

A short biography

I worked for many years in the IT industry where I found that my ability to quickly understand new technologies made me a valuable resource. But I was also good with people, always interested in what they were trying to do and why. I quickly moved into sales and marketing where I could put these talents to good use.

When my children were still young I found the demands of the IT world were not what I wanted at that time. I started my own business as a Nutritional Therapist which allowed me to pick up my children from school each day. Helping people by talking to them and understanding why they did not feel right seemed to work well for me. I started to pass on my knowledge by becoming a biochemistry tutor at a private college.

Eventually the teaching side of my work became the most important. I went back to university and became a qualified teacher. Now I teach science and maths in a special school environment dealing with mental health problems.

All this time I was working as a man. Only my wife knew that I was also needing to be a woman. At the beginning of 2014 I started to come out as a transgender woman. I have since met and listened to trans people of all sorts. I have discovered how little most people know about us, how to work with us and how misconceptions about who and what we are dominate people’s perceptions. Now I am offering insights into the transgender world so that organisations are better able to work with their transgender staff and customers.

I have given training to groups where they have realised how they can work better with transgender people. I also offer workplace walkthroughs so that I can see how well staff respond to trans customers or colleagues.
